Compounding

Compounding Services

Compounding is the preparation of a customized medication by a pharmacist to meet an individual patient’s needs. It combines the traditional role of a pharmacist and chemist with the latest medical knowledge and technology.

Benefits of Compounding

There are benefits associated with compounding, many of which focus on providing patients with pharmaceutical products that have been customized to fit their own unique needs when standard marketed drugs fail to do so.

Compounding is often required for medical reasons; some patients require a particular non-essential ingredient to be removed from their medication to prevent an allergic reaction. Others require compounded medication to acquire an exact dosage amount that is unique to their own personal needs and which may not be available in the available marketed drugs.

Compounding pharmacies are also used for more optional reasons. Often times, patients will need their medications in a different form. For example, if an elderly or pediatric patient has difficulty taking their medication in capsule form; a compounding pharmacist can provide the same medication in a cream base form to allow the patient to apply the medication topically, or in a syrup or solution form for easier administration.

Changing the dosage form

of your medication

If you cannot swallow a tablet or capsule, we can compound your medication into a liquid, rectal suppository, or transdermal gel to carry medicine through the skin.

Reducing Side Effects

Often times, applying a medication topically, significantly reduces side effects such as stomach upset/ulcers, drowsiness, nausea, etc..

Desiccated Thyroid

Desiccated thyroid is used to replace thyroid hormone for people whose thyroid glands do not make sufficient amounts (hypothyroidism). Thyroid hormone is necessary for increasing the metabolic rate of body tissues.

Desiccated thyroid is used to treat hypothyroidism (low blood levels of thyroid hormone) and myxedema (the body's changes associated with prolonged low blood levels of thyroid hormone).

For some patients, commericially available Desiccated Thyroid either is not tolerated by the patient, often due to different fillers used or the available doses do not allow flexible dose adjustments. This is where we come in, we can customize Desiccated Thryoid for patients in different strengths and filler options to give them the flexibility they need to get the right results.

Bio - Identical Hormones Replacement Therapy (HRT)

Compounding pharmacists at Mapleview Medical Pharmacy can create customized HRT that closely mimics individual patients’ optimum natural hormone levels.

With natural, customized HRT, patients can mitigate the symptoms associated with menopause and other hormonal imbalances, while minimizing side effects and risks associated with synthetic hormones. With bio-identical hormones, doses can be easily adjusted and fine-tuned to control symptoms and provide long-term health benefits.

Hormones perform a vast array of complex functions in the body. When hormone levels are deficient or imbalanced, people can suffer unpleasant symptoms. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) has many benefits for women (and men) suffering from hormone imbalances and deficiencies.

Providing Commercially Unavailable, Unformulated or Discontinued Medications

Pain Medication

Pain management is essential. At times, treating the underlying disease does not result in elimination of uncontrolled pain for patients.

In these instances, a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals will work together to help patients manage their chronic pain and continue to function with their families, friends and society.

Topical or transdermal creams and gels can be formulated to provide high local concentrations at the site of application, reducing side effects by passing first-pass metabolism. Your Mapleview Medical Pharmacist will work together with you and your healthcare practitioner to solve problems by customizing medications that meet your individual needs.

Contact our compounding pharmacist to discuss the dosage form, strength and medication or combination that is most appropriate for your patient.

Western medicine has tended to treat hormone imbalances and deficiencies with doses of synthetic hormones. Although they are similar to the hormones that occur naturally in our bodies, synthetic hormones are chemically and structurally different than human hormones. For these reasons, synthetic hormones can cause undesirable side effects (such as fluid retention, nausea, breast tenderness, blood clots, headaches, leg cramps, irritability, and depression). The body may also take longer to eliminate them.

Bio-identical hormones, on the other hand, are chemically identical to the hormones produced by the body. For this reason, they produce few unwanted side effects when taken in appropriate quantities and ratios. They are also easily eliminated from the body.
